Induction of Alpha Sigma Nu Members

Alpha Sigma Nu, Jesuit Honor Society, will induct 93 new members on Sunday, April 6, following Mass at 2 p.m. at the College Church.
All members of the honor society, as well as family and friends of the inductees are invited to attend.

Among the 2008 inductees are three Honorary Members: Rev. Frank Reale, S.J., Vice President for Mission and Ministry;
Sister Carla Mae Streeter, Professor at Aquinas Institute of Theology; and Professor John J. Ammann of the School of Law.

Alpha Sigma Nu, national honor society of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, is unique among honor societies because it initiates students in all schools of the university, who are honored for their scholarship, loyalty, and service.

Alpha Sigma Nu was founded in 1915 at Marquette University, and it has chapters at all 28 Jesuit colleges and universities, at the Jesuit Schools of Theology in the United States and Canada, and at Sogang University, Korea. Locally, the chapter, established in 1923, sponsors the annual Nancy McNeir Ring Award for Outstanding Faculty. The award is presented at Commencement time. It is named to honor the memory of Miss Nancy M. Ring, who became the first Dean of Women at the University in 1943 and served for 25 years.

The triennial convention of Alpha Sigma Nu will be held in St. Louis at Saint Louis University.



The 2008 Atlas Week Program:
"Global Justice, Local Responses,"
March 31 - April 4, 2008

Mrs. Jehan Sadat will deliver the Keynote Speech, "It Takes Courage, Vision and Principles to Change the World” at the Eighth Annual Atlas Week Signature Symposium. The widow of the late Egyptian president and Nobel Peace Prize-winner Anwar Sadat, Madame Sadat is a devoted activist for women's rights, literacy, and humanitarian causes worldwide. She was responsible for the Egyptian civil rights laws which expanded rights for women, founded the Arab-African Women's League, and has continued her late husband's quest for peace.

The Symposium is scheduled for Thursday, April 3, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. in the Busch Student Center Ballroom. A private reception with Mrs. Sadat will be held following the Signature Symposium. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to AtlasReception@gmail.com. Spaces are limited, so preference will be given in the order received. Please respond no later than Thursday, March 27th.

There are over 70 events planned for Atlas week including special lectures and panel discussions, student presentations, cultural events, international films, the Parade of Nations, and the Billiken World Festival. Pierre DeSmet Faculty Grants for International Development

The Center for International Studies is pleased to announce the creation of a new faculty grant program devoted to international curricular and research development.

The DeSmet Faculty Grants for International Development will support International Studies secondary appointments in creating new international studies content courses, in developing research of an
international character, or in purchasing materials to support an already existing international studies content course. The grants can
also be used to support international faculty exchange. The awards are in the form of small grants of $500-$1000. No funds may be used for direct travel costs or for fees to attend a conference. Grants are also limited to secondary appointments of International Studies.

The deadline for submission of the grant materials is April 14th.

UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES SEEKING FACULTY INPUT

The University Libraries are in a period of renewal. We are looking at Pius Library and the Medical Center Library in new and different ways. Our goal is to provide faculty, and students, with the facilities, resources, and services that you need in order for you to excel in your teaching, research, and scholarship. To achieve this goal, we need your help!!

Apply for VOICES Project Grant

The VOICES Project announces the 2008 Sustainability Grants Program for Faculty. This is a merit-based program with awards from $1,000 to $4,000. These awards will be given this spring for innovative faculty-initiated activities that sustain the themes of the VOICES Project and meet certain criteria. presents Miao Xiaochun
The Last Judgment in Cyberspace

Opening Reception on Sunday, February 3, 3-5 p.m.
Using computer modeling technology, Chinese artist Miao Xiaochun recreated Michelangelo’s famous Sistine Chapel painting of the Last Judgment as a virtual environment. From this virtual environment the artist has made five large digital prints and a video animation. Through these works the viewer becomes a participant in the scene, able to consider the more than 400 characters in the original painting from a variety of new perspectives. The result is fresh insight into a masterpiece of art history and into the questions about ultimate meaning it confronts.

The History Department's Study Group on Cross-Cultural History: Dr. R. Bentley Anderson (History Department) will present a lecture titled, “Segregation, Separation and Apartheid: America, Rhodesia, and South Africa During the Cold War”, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. in the Teasdale Conference Room at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art. The History Department wishes to thank Fr. David Suwalsky S.J. and Saint Louis University Museum of Art staff for making available the conference room for this session.

Faculty Publications, Presentations, Awards


Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
Dr. Tim Kusky, of Earth and Atmorpheric Sciences and the Center for Environmental Sciences, gave the invited keynote speach on "The Columbia Supercontinent" at the Conference on the Tectonics of the Indian Subcontinent, to celebrate the Silver Jubilee Anniversary of the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay. The conference was followed by a field excursion to Rajastan of NW India.

Modern and Classical Languages
Dr. Jean-Louis Pautrot delivered a paper titled "Pascal Quignard et
l'outrepassement de la littérature: leçons de musique et de peinture" at the International 20th and 21st-Century French & Francophone Studies Colloquium held at Georgetown University on March 6-8.
Dr. Pautrot's edition and anthology of André Hodeir's jazz writings, The André Hodeir Jazz Reader (2006), was reviewed in Contemporary French Civilization 32.1 (Winter/Spring 2008).

Political Science
Dr. Emmanuel Uwalaka authored "The Church and HIV/AIDS in Nigeria: The Case of Two Dioceses," published in National Social Science Journal, vol. 27:2 (2007).
Dr. Uwalaka reviewed the book, Political Science Research Methods, 6th edition by Janet Buttolph Johnson and H.T. Reynolds with Jason D. Mycoff, (CQ Press, 2008).

Theological Studies
Dr. Cornelia B. Horn presented a public lecture,
"Christian Apocrypha and Early Islamic Literature in
Dialogue in the Byzantine World: The Case of the 'Book of
Mary' and Qur'an, suras 3, 5, and 19" at Dumbarton Oaks,
Harvard University's Research Institute for Byzantine
Studies, in Washington, DC. on March 17, 2008.
