Freshman Summer Reading Book Available for Faculty

Complimentary copies of this year's chosen freshman summer reading book, Heroic Leadership by Chris Lowney, are now available for faculty.

The review copies for faculty are made available to encourage potential facilitation and integration of the freshman summer reading in areas of the freshman academic curriculum. If you are a faculty member interested in obtaining a copy while supplies last, bring your faculty ID and visit the Student Involvement Center in Busch Student Center, Room 335.

Graduate School's Annual
Pre-Commencement

The Graduate School cordially invites the entire faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences to the ceremony and reception.

The ceremony will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2006, in the Scottish Rite Auditorium. The faculty will need to assemble in the West Gallery by 8:30 a.m. in order to begin the processional at 8:50 a.m. The ceremony will last no more than one hour and 15 minutes and will be followed by a reception at the John Connelly Mall. In case of rain, the reception will be held in the atrium of Cook Hall.


Drewe's Summer Sales
to benefit
Helping Our Own

Helping Our Own will offer employees a "sweet and salty" taste of summer this year when its annual University-wide Ted Drewe's frozen custard sale also features Gus' pretzels on the first day of summer, June 21.
Cups of Drewe's frozen custard and Gus' pretzels will be sold at sites on the Frost and HSC campuses and at the Salus Center, 11 a.m. -
1 p.m.

On the Medical Center Campus, sales will be held on Caroline Mall, at the front desk of the School of Nursing, and in front of the Doctors' Office Building. At Salus Center, Drewe's can be purchased in the lobby.

On the Frost campus, Drewe's sales will be in the quad between Pius XII Memorial Library and the Simon Recreation Center, near Busch Student Center, and by mobile, roving salespersons. In case of rain, the sales will be moved to nearby overhangs.

Frozen custard cups will come in chocolate, strawberry and vanilla and sell for $3 each. Pretzels will be sold two for $1. Departmental orders with advance payment will be taken up to 48 hours in advance of the sales. To place an order, call 977-2428 or email Mary Flick.

The Helping Our Own program provides a one-time monetary grant to any full-time or part-time employee experiencing an unexpected financial crisis. It is funded by University employee payroll pledges, gifts and fundraisers.

10:00 a.m., Savvis Center (1401 Clark Avenue). Buses will be available at the Laclede parking garage; boarding buses from 8:00 a.m. - 8:20 a.m.
Faculty are to arrive at Savvis at 8:45--use the 15th Street entrance.

Faculty Publications, Presentations, Awards

American Studies
Dr. Shawn Michelle Smith co-led a seminar discussion for the Photography and Memory Workshop and delivered a lecture titled "The Evidence of Lynching Photographs" at the Beinecke Library at Yale University on April 25, 2006.

Chemistry
Anna Kinsella, a Saint Louis university senior and chemistry major doing undergraduate research, has been named the winner of the 36th Annual Leopold Marcus Award competition for her presentation, "Development and Optimization of a Microchip-based Bio-fuel Cell."
Ms. Kinsella's work was carried out under the direction of Drs. Shelley Minteer and R. Scott Martin.

Finalists Cassondra Caldwell, Jennifer Fraser, Mark Mans and Dianne Tran will also receive award citations.

The Leopold Marcus Award was established by Jack and Gertrude Marcus in memory of his late father and is awarded annually to a senior chemistry major doing undergraduate research at Saint Louis University. For more information, contact Bruce Kowert at 314-9077-2837 or at kowertba@slu.edu.

History
Dr. Philip Gavitt, Associate Professor of History, published an article, "Corporate Beneficence and Historical Narratives of Communal Well-being" in Roger Crum and John Paoletti, eds., Renaissance Florence: A Social History (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2006) pp. 138-160.

Philosophy
Bill Rehg, S.J. recently published the epilogue essay, "Do Jesuit Scholarly Endeavors Cohere? Self-Reckoning and the Postmodern Challenge," in the anthology Jesuit Postmodern: Scholarship, Vocation, and Identity in the 21st Century, edited by Francis Clooney, S.J. (Lexington Books, 2006). For the fall semester of 2006, Br. Rehg will be Visiting Professor at Loyola University-Chicago.

Dr. John P. Doyle authored "Mastri and Some Jesuits on Possible and Impossible Objects of God's Knowledge and Power," in 'Rem in seipsa cernere' Saggi sul pensiero filosofico di Bartolomeo Mastri (1602-1673), ed. by Marco Forlivesi (Padova: Il Poligrafo, 2006), pp. 439-68.

Sociology/Criminal Justice
Dr. Katherine C. MacKinnon was invited to give a presentation to the Department of Anthropology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, on her current research project in Suriname. The talk was titled, "Community Ecology of Sympatric Primate Species at Brownburg Nature Park, Suriname," and focused on behavioral ecology and conservation issues at this South American fieldsite.

Theological Studies
Dr. Ronald Modras has published an article in the latest (April 21) issue of Commonweal magazine, titled "In His Own Footsteps: Benedict XVI, From Professor to Pontiff."
