| MESSAGE FROM DEAN HOGAN Dear Chairs, Directors, Faculty, and Staff of the College, “To everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3 : 1) And so it is time for me to say a fond farewell to the College of Arts and Sciences in my role as associate dean. It has been my privilege to serve in this capacity for the past eight years. I am grateful to Dean Shirley Dowdy and the associate deans who supported my being hired and for their confidence in my abilities to serve in this position. I am thankful as well to Deans Joe Weixlmann, Mike May, Mike Sproule, and most recently Don Brennan, all of whom encouraged me in my work. I am indebted to all of our outstanding staff, particularly to my dedicated assistant Linda Thien, for their friendship and for making my job easier. I will miss my collaboration with Steve Dina with whom it has been a joy to work for eight years and, although more briefly, with Vince Spaziano – princes both! And I shall miss my day to day contacts with many of you – thank you for your support and patience over the years. On almost all days, my work has been most gratifying; yes, even the “space wars” (I shall miss the challenge!). My greatest satisfactions have included: seeing the growth of the programs with which I have worked and the dedication and excellence of the directors, an amazing group of faculty and administrators; the advancements in assessment; the evolving sense of Jesuit mission; the focused attention on undergraduate initiatives. I am grateful to Provost Weixlmann and Father Frank Reale, Vice President for Mission and Ministry, for the new opportunity afforded me to contribute to the enhancement of mission within the curriculum, truly one of my passions. I look forward to working with many of you as this endeavor progresses. Andy Warhol's "Silver Clouds" September
29 and 30: 8 p.m. This
creative piece uses eyewitness accounts, court transcripts and other
archival material to create a dramatic moment-by-moment retelling
of the historic 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in New York
City that caused the death of 146 garment workers, mainly young immigrant
girls. The play documents the social upheaval that followed, culminating
in the manslaughter trial of the owners...the outcome of which inspired
outrage across the country and set the stage for shaping American
lablor law for decades to come. The play paints a heartbreakingly
clear picture of a disastrous day in American history and explores
the human toll such a tragedy takes on us all. September
