What is a COVE Internship?
Professional schools look for evidence that the applicant has gained first-hand experience in their chosen career field. Saint Louis University has traditionally encouraged students to gain this type of exposure through the COVE Internship Program sponsored by the Career Development Office. This type of experience is especially important for students applying to schools of medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine. Students interested in careers in podiatry and optometry should also consider working in the appropriate setting.

Premedical students at Saint Louis University typically do COVE Internships at Saint Louis University Hospital and Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, two of the major teaching hospitals for Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

The COVE Internship requires a student to complete 60 hours of volunteer work at the hospital, typically in the emergency department (ER), operating room (OR), intensive care unit (ICU). Students are encouraged to complete COVE Internships early in their undergraduate years. Many students complete internships spring semester of their freshman year. As a pre-health professions student, the internship should be completed by the end of the sophomore year of college.

How do I get to be a COVE intern?
Students interested in becoming a COVE Intern must apply in the Preprofessional Health Studies office. COVE Internships are open to SLU students only. Applications for spring 2008 will be available October 1. Applications for summer and fall 2008 wil be available March 1. For more information please contact:
