Medical Scholars Program at Saint Louis University
The Medical Scholars Program gives special recognition to exceptional first-year (freshmen) premedical students. It is intended to reduce some of the stress involved in the premedical studies program.

To become a medical scholar, you must apply to the program on the Medical Scholars application form by December 1. This will be available early in September on the Undergraduate Admissions web site. To be considered for the Medical Scholars program, you must have:

  • an acceptance to the SLU freshman class following completion of your high school diploma. Contact Undergraduate Admissions for application information
  • a composite ACT score of 30 or higher, or
  • a SAT total of 1320 (math + verbal) or higher.
  • an outstanding high school academic record

***APPLICATION PROCESS***

To apply for the Medical Scholars program, the student will fill out an application for the Medical Scholars program, available through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, by December 1. This application is separate from the general admissions application to SLU. The Preprofessional Health Studies program Director will then review all applicant files. The accept or decline letters will be mailed to applicants on March 1.

If a student does not have the requisite ACT or SAT score by December first, but is planning to re-take the exam, they should still apply to the Medical Scholars program by the December 1 deadline. Their application will then be considered once we receive their latest exam scores. The latest date the student can take the SAT or ACT is in December to be considered for the Medical Scholars program.

The Program of Study
During your first year as a Medical Scholar, you will be required to attend a special orientation. This meeting will occur during the first week of the fall semester. To remain in this program you must, at the close of the first year, complete 30 credits with an official Saint Louis University grade point average (GPA) of at least a 3.40 in the sciences/mathematics and minimally an overall GPA of 3.40 for all courses. At the end of the sophomore year (60 credits) the overall cumulative average must be 3.50 or above and the sciences/mathematics cumulative average must be 3.50 or higher.

Medical Scholars with the required grade averages apply to Saint Louis University School of Medicine for admission at the conclusion of the sophomore year. During spring semester of the sophomore year, Medical Scholars with the required grade averages will submit an application to the School of Medicine and request evaluations by the Pre-health Professions Committee on Evaluations. Interviews will be conducted by the Admissions Committee of the School of Medicine, and applicants may receive a provisional acceptance to the School of Medicine by early summer preceding their junior year. Students are accepted for the year immediately following completion of undergraduate work. (The School of Medicine adheres to the guidelines of the Association of American Medical Colleges in regard to the Americans with Disabilities Act -- Please refer to "Who is Eligible to Apply"  -  item 4 Technical Standards for Admission to the School of Medicine).

If a Medical Scholar who has been accepted into Saint Louis University School of Medicine decides to apply to other medical schools, this early acceptance will be withdrawn. If such a student then wishes to be reconsidered for admission, they must follow the regular application process for the School of Medicine.

The program curriculum for the first and second years is the same sequence of courses recommended for students in the regular premedical curriculum (see below), except students who elect a Biomedical Engineering (BME) major. Students in Physics and Electrical Engineering Bioelectronics Track also deviate from this course of study. Thes majors complete a curriculum specifically designed to meet requirements of their major and entrance requirements for medical school.  Any change of courses in the Scholars Curriculum requires the specific approval of the Director of Preprofessional Health Studies and the School of Medicine. Advanced Placement and 1-8-1-8 credit from high school may apply to courses in this curriculum; however, 60 semester hours must be completed in residence at Saint Louis University. AP credit and 1-8-1-8 credit for biology, chemistry, and physics are not accepted for Medical Scholars. These courses must be taken at Saint Louis University. You will be allowed to make substitutions only with approval.

*Medical Scholars must complete one math course in residence. The minimum math requirement for scholars is completion of MT A142: Analytic Geometry and Calculus I.

Medical Scholars must complete an undergraduate degree at Saint Louis University with a major chosen from those available within the College of Arts and Sciences, the Doisy College of Health Sciences (Investigative Medical Science, Health Information Management, and Exercise Science only), Parks College (Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Bioelectronics Track only) or the School of Public Health (Health Management). Junior and Senior Medical Scholars must complete lectures and laboratories in Physics (Organic Chemistry for BME majors) and take an upper division science course fall and spring semester selected from an approved list. These are science courses relevant to a medical school curriculum. They must also maintain their 3.50/3.50 grade averages. At the appropriate time, Medical Scholars are also required to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT); however, the score does not affect admission. Medical Scholars are expected to achieve their highest possible score on the MCAT.
