Careers | Selection of Major
Selection of Major Professional schools do not select applicants on the basis of what they have chosen for a major. What is most important to admissions committees is that applicants have demonstrated an understanding of their strengths. Selection of a major by a pre-health professions student should include two considerations: 1) the discipline is of interest to the student, and 2) the major provides a knowledge base for several career alternatives. Successful Saint Louis University pre-health students have completed majors in many disciplines such as psychology, modern and classical languages, English, and theological studies as well as the more traditional majors in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. "It is true that non-science majors who take a minimum number of science courses to meet medical school requirements must do well in those courses to ensure adequate preparation and favorable consideration by admission committees."* Curricula for Majors Look at the following pages for sample curricula that meet entrance requirements for professional schools. The samples include A&S core requirements, entrance requirements, and departmental requirements. For majors in other colleges and schools of Saint Louis University, A&S core requirements are replaced by those specific to the college or school. These are sample curricula and are designed to give you a starting point for preparing your course of of study. Majors: Arts and Sciences
