Mev Puleo Scholarship in Latin American Theology and Culture

Mev Puleo (1964-1996)

Mev Puleo was a theological educator, photojournalist and social change activist. A 1985 B.A. graduate of St. Louis University, she used photographs and interviews to draw attention to the struggles and aspirations of the poor struggling to defend their dignity and transform their world. Mev had a special love for the people of Latin America and traveled extensively to Brazil, El Salvador, Mexico and Haiti. Mev's vocation of advocacy, education and art was tragically cut short by a malignant brain tumor; she died in January 1996 at the age of 32. Her parents, Peter and Evelyn Puleo, established the Mev Puleo Scholarship in Latin American Theology in her honor.

The Mev Puleo Scholarship combines formal study and experiential learning to foster awareness and understanding of the people and culture of Latin American countries, Liberation Theology and the influence and role of the Catholic Church as an agent of change in Latin America. It is the hope of Mr. and Mrs. Puleo that, like Mev, the recipients will become advocates for social justice in and for the poor in underdeveloped countries.

In addition to their formal studies in Theology at Saint Louis University, scholarship recipients spend a period of two months during the summer in a supervised immersion program in Nicaragua in order to personally experience the country's culture and the influence of the Catholic Church upon its people. Upon their return to Saint Louis University, the Puleo Scholarship recipient presents a comprehensive report of his or her experience to the faculty of the Theological Studies and to Theology classes as requested by the Theological Studies Faculty.

The Mev Puleo Scholarship in Latin American Theology and Culture will be awarded on a competitive basis to undergraduate majors or graduate students in Theological Studies at Saint Louis University. Recipients are provided with funding for the Latin American immersion experience, including travel and living expenses such as housing and meals. Three credit hours in Theological Studies will be granted upon completion of all program requirements.

If you have any questions, please contact Julie Hanlon Rubio or Mary Boles in the Department of Theological Studies.
