1979 Bellarmine Lecture

Mitchell Dahood
"The Ebla Tablets and Old Testament Theology"

The importance of the Ebla tablets for Old Testament theology cannot be underestimated. It must be remembered, however, that no single article can deal with all aspects of Ebla’s significance for Old Testament research. In this lecture Prof. Dahood concentrates on the evolution of the names of God showing how biblical Hebrew and Ugaritic can help understand Eblaite and vice versa. Rather than overestimating the Israelites’ religious and cultural indebtedness to the Canaanites we may, says Prof. Dahood, have underestimated it.
