1980 Bellarmine Lecture

Raymond E. Brown
“The Meaning of the Bible”

The biblical books written by human beings in the language and outlook of their times are held in faith to be God’s word for all times. Historical biblical study enables us at times to recognize a difference between what a passage first meant when the author wrote it and what it came to mean in subsequent church life or what it means to the church today. In this lecture Raymond Brown seeks to explore aspects of the tensions that have developed as we begin to speak of various meanings of the Bible.
