1981 Bellarmine Lecture

Richard A. McCormick
“Bioethics and Method: Where Do We Start?”

It is important, Father McCormick maintains, that we learn to think about bioethics in a disciplined way. We should (1) ask about the origins of our basic moral commitment and then consider the relationship of (2) cultural threats, (3) religious faith, and (4) concrete norms to that moral commitment and how these (5) relate to the emergence of public morality in our time. While Father McCormick admits that there are other ways to begin thinking about bioethics, he believes that if we neglect these five points they will return to haunt us.
