1986 Bellarmine Lecture

Piet Schoonenberg
“A Sapiential Reading of John’s Prologue:
Some Reflections on Views of Reginald Fuller and James Dunn”

Especially since Nicea (325) and Chalcedon (451) the Prologue of John’s gospel has often been read in the light of Christological and Trinitarian controversies. Piet Schoonenberg, S.J., seeks rather to read it in its own biblical context, emphasizing the connection between the Logos of the Prologue and the Wisdom of Old Testament sapiential literature.
