1993 Bellarmine Lecture

Jacob Neusner
"The Spirituality of the Talmud: How does Holy Israel know God?"

Imagine, asks Jacob Neusner, what we would know about God, and how we would know it, if we took paths other than the ones we know, but that carry us in the same direction? Christianity knows God through Jesus Christ. Judaism knows God through the written and the oral Torah. Spirituality is the encounter with God in the here and now. Holy Israel encounters God in music. When Holy Israel sings, it sings to God and it sings God’s song.
