2001 Bellarmine Lecture

Richard P. McBrien
"The Saints: An Ecclesiological Reflection"

Richard McBrien ’s opening survey of the life and canonization of Robert Cardinal Bellarmine illustrates the fact that sainthood is about real persons and that political considerations are sometimes brought to bear on a declaration of sainthood. After considering specific aspects of the saints and the church, McBrien discusses the canonization process itself, including the question of whether or not infallibility plays a role in that process.
