| The
Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy is
an interdisciplinary clinical program that enables
M.A. graduates of our program, as well as graduates
of other mental health master's level programs,
to increase their knowledge of marriage and
family therapy and their clinical skills conducting
therapy with couples or families.
Coursework ranges from 15
to 33 credit hours, depending on coursework
taken at the master's level. All Certificate
in Marriage and Family Therapy students take
at least two practicums in marriage and family
therapy at the Center for Counseling and Family
Therapy, the department's clinic on campus.
Students may select courses that focus on requirements
for licensure as a marriage and family therapist.
The Department of Counseling and Family Therapy
(CFT) and the School of Social Service teach
courses for the Certificate Program. When students
are in their final semester of the Certificate
Program, they write a position paper and present
it to faculty and students. This serves as the
capstone requirement for the Certificate.
CFT students in the final
stages of their M.A. in Counseling may seek early
admission to the Certificate Program and then
take electives that would also count within the
Certificate Program. To apply, students must submit
an application or update their current application
with a new goal statement, transcript, and letters
of recommendation. In addition, students who are
in the latter phases of the Certificate Program
who have met the prerequisites for the Ph.D. program
may apply for subsequent acceptance into the doctoral
program. If accepted, most or all of the courses
taken for the Certificate will also count towards
the Ph.D. Click
