Missouri's first legislators met in the buildings of the First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site to undertake the task of reorganizing Missouri's territorial government into a progressive state system. From June 4,1821, to Oct. 1,1826, heated debates of state's rights and slavery filled the rooms of the temporary Capitol. The second floor of two adjoining Federal-style brick buildings was divided and used as Senate and House chambers, an office for the governor, and a small committee room. The first floor of the Peck brothers' building housed a general store and Ruluff Peck's family residence. Chauncy Shepard operated a carpenter shop on the first floor of the adjoining building. |

Only the second of its kind the country, The Griot Museum of Black History opened as The Black World History Wax Museum in February 1997. After 11 years of being variously known, we hit upon what seems to be the perfect name “The Griot Museum of Black History” ("The Griot”). In some African countries, the “griot,”(pronounced “GREE-OH”) is a highly respected member of the community who collects, preserves and shares the stories, objects, and cultural traditions of the community. Our new name more accurately reflects what we do -- collect, perserve, and share the stories, culture, and history of Black people - particularly those with a regional connection to American history. |

The Saint Louis Art Museum was founded in 1879 and was originally located in downtown St. Louis but relocated to our current home in Forest Park following the 1904 World's Fair. Designed by famed architect Cass Gilbert, the Museum's Beaux-Arts style building bears the inscription Dedicated to Art and Free to All. The Museum has unveiled reconceived galleries in the Main Building, the initial phase in a series of reinstallations that will culminate in the public opening in mid-2013 of the new East Building.
