What are you passionate about? Civic engagement, the impact of technology on society and my family
Do you have an impressive experience?
Before starting law school, two very different experiences prepared for a legal career. I spent a summer in Washington, D.C. as an intern for a U.S. Senator. My experiences there exposed me to various facets and faces of the legal system that inspired me get involved in the legal system. The other, stranger, experience was improvisational comedy. My two years practicing improv taught me the values of collaboration, creative thinking and confidence in front of an audience.

Law School Snapshot
What advice would you give first-year students?
Everyone studies differently. Definitely take to heart advice from older students and faculty, but don’t lose sight of the effective study strategies that helped you in the past. Of course, do the readings, pay attention in class, review your notes and figure out what your professor wants you to know. Importantly, find a hobby that takes your mind off of the stresses of law school.
Who is your favorite professor?
It’s hard to choose, the professors during my first year were all great. Professor Cherry really did a lot for me. First, she took every student in our huge Contracts class out for coffee, because she deeply wanted to get to know us all on an individual basis. She also took significant time out of her lecture to give us really helpful advice regarding outlining and exam strategies. Finally she notified me of an incredible summer internship experience and helped me every step of the way during the application process. While I ultimately didn’t get the position, Professor Cherry’s support gave me a clear understanding for various legal passions I have.
What impresses you most about School of Law professors?
They truly want their students to succeed.
What’s most challenging about adjusting to law school?
The reality that your grade in most law school courses is decided by one test. I’ve found that how I decide to respond to this stress is the most challenging part for me.
What professional experiences/summer positions or clinical experience have you had?
In the past I have interned for the United States Senate in a senator’s D.C. office, Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, as well as a general contractor-designer as a legal intern. I am currently a clerk for Behr, McCarter & Potter, P.C. in Clayton, Mo.
Spotlight on St. Louis
What is your favorite part of St. Louis?
The City Museum. How can you top a playground for adults? The local food favorites, like Ted Drewes Frozen Custard and Billy Goat Chips, are close runners up.
What’s does St. Louis offer that you didn’t expect?
Although I’m a native St. Louisan, I grew up in the county. Now living near the law school, it is great to experience the urban side of St. Louis and be a part of the downtown area’s current revitalization – such as the Law School moving downtown, the upcoming renovation of the Arch grounds and walkable urban neighborhoods like the Loop, Washington Ave., and Mercantile Exchange.
