Activities and Interests

SLU LAW Extracurricular involvement: Secretary of Black Law Students’ Association (BLSA); served on the Women Law Students’ Association’s Domestic Violence Awareness Week Committee

Do you have any unusual or interesting passions/interests? I’ve been obsessed with the criminal justice system since I was young. Through my social work studies, I’ve developed a particular interest in working with the prison population and children of incarcerated parents.

Favorite book: “A Piece of Cake” by Cupcake Brown

Favorite quote: “Take criticism seriously, but not personally. If there is truth or merit in the criticism, try to learn from it. Otherwise, let it roll right off you.” – Hilary Rodham Clinton

Law School Snapshot

What advice would you give first-year students?

I would remind first year students to stay true to what works for you – don’t fall into the habit of doing what other students are doing just because you think it is how law students are “supposed” to behave. If you study better alone, study alone. If you prefer handwritten notes, write out your notes. It is also very important to find a balance! Study hard, exercise, eat healthy and set aside time to relax and have fun. Figure out what you are interested in and get involved in a student organization.

What’s your favorite class?

It is Criminal Law with Professor Branham. The material is always interesting, and Professor Branham is amazing! She’s fun, sharp and feisty. I loved her class.

What professional experiences/summer positions or clinical experience have you had?

This summer, I am clerking at the Douglas County Attorney’s Office in Nebraska. Prior to law school, I was a CASA Intern in the Sarpy County Juvenile Court in Papillion, Neb., for a year. I loved it because I had the opportunity to interact with the juvenile court workgroup on a daily basis, and more specifically, with a population that I am passionate about – juvenile delinquents and child abuse and neglect victims. Before CASA, I was a program development intern at Creative Visions Human Development Institute in Des Moines, Iowa which was a great experience because the agency primarily served the low-income community.
