SLU LAW Professors Awarded for Scholarship

Congratulations to three SLU LAW professors, Yvette Liebesman, Marcia McCormick and Elizabeth Pendo, who have all recently received awards for their work. The Student Government Association gave Pendo and McCormick 2013 excellence in teaching awards, and Liebesman won the 2013 Ladas Memorial Award Competition.

Yvette LiebesmanThe 2013 Ladas Memorial Award is given out by the International Trademark Association to recognize an outstanding paper on the subject of intellectual property. Liebesman’s paper, entitled, “The Mark of a Resold Good,” evaluates the first sale doctrine and the role it plays in controlling second sales, particularly online. The first sale doctrine enables people who have bought someone else’s property, for example a book, to dispose of that property however they wish when they are done with it. This includes reselling it, renting it, giving it away, and destroying it. However, it does not enable the new owner of the property to copy it in any way. Benjamin Wilson ('10), a law clerk in the US District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, also contributed to the paper.

Winners of the award receive a $2,000 cash prize, a three volume set of Stephen P. Ladas’ treatise, “Patents, Trademarks, and Related Rights,” and their article published in INTA’s legal journal, The Trademark Reporter. The Ladas Memorial Award competition was established by members of Ladas & Perry LLP to honor the contributions made to intellectual property law by the late Stephen P. Ladas. The competition is supported by Ladas & Perry LLP, and hosted by INTA.

The Student Government Association of Saint Louis University hands out excellence in teaching awards at the end of every academic year. The awards are one of the highest honors a professor can receive from SGA. This year, winners were picked from over 100 applications that praised the professors’ commitment to the SLU community and their dedication to their students.

Marcia McCormickMarcia McCormick (left) won the 2013 Faculty Excellence Award for the School of Law. This award is given to one faculty member from each college who demonstrates excellence and dedication in their involvement with the SLU community, especially in the classroom arena.

Elizabeth Pendo (right) won the 2013 Diversity and Social Justice Award. Faculty members from all SLU colleges are eligible for this award. The award recognizes a professor who lives out the tenets of the Oath of Inclusion in their daily lives as well as incorporates social justice and diversity issues within their classroom.
