Summer advice from Career Services

Now that final exams are over and the semester has come to an end, many students are starting their summer jobs, internships, clerkships, volunteer work, or other résumé-building activities. We asked our Career Services staff for tips on how to make the most of your summer activities, and they sent us some great ones:

  • Keep detailed notes about the tasks you are performing at your summer position so that you can easily update your resume.
  •
  • Update your resume near the end of June since the first Fall 2013 On-Campus Interview applications will be due to Career Services in late July.  Don't wait until the last minute!
  •
  • Develop a writing sample and ask your employer for permission to use your document as your writing sample.  Talk to your employer about redacting client names/information.
  •
  • Talk to your supervising attorney or mentor about being a reference for you in the future.
  •
  • Network within your organization.  Invite attorneys to lunch from other departments or areas of your office.  Ask for their career advice.
  •
  • Join BAMSL and the St. Louis County Bar Association or other local bar associations where you work.  Attend their summer events and meetings.
  •
  • Ask your supervising attorney to attend a professional development conference or CLE.  There are lots of opportunities in June since July is the CLE reporting deadline.
  •
  • Avoid personal email, texting, social media, and telephone use at work unless absolutely necessary.
  •
  • Put away your cell phone.  Turn it off in meetings, at court, and during lunches with other attorneys.  This is the biggest complaint we receive from employers.
  •
  • Establish your professional work habits early in the summer.  Arrive early and stay late, especially at the beginning.  Never leave the office before the hourly support staff leaves.  Time is money.
  •
  • Feel free to email, call or meet with Career Services with specific questions during the summer.  We keep regular business hours all summer and look forward to hearing from you.

The Office of Career Services has lots of resources for our students and alumni as they navigate the legal job market. Their section of the SLU LAW website has more details on their programming as well as information on how to get in contact with them.
