Awards and Recognitions

Dr. Daniela Salvemini  has been invited to speak at the Winter Conference on Brain Research, Snowbird, Utah, USA, on January 23, 2012. The title of Dr Salvemini's lecture “Targeting Ceramide in Opiate Induced Hyperalgesia and Antinociceptive Tolerance”  will be part of a workshop on “Glia: A nemesis in opioid use”.
Gina L.C. Yosten, Ph.D., a May 2010 graduate of the doctoral program in Pharmacological and Physiological Science, and a current Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Samson’s laboratory in the department, has been chosen to receive the 2012 Virendra B. Mahesh Award of Excellence in Endocrinology from the America Physiological Society at the annual Experimental Biology Meeting in San Diego, California. The purpose of the Mahesh Award is to promote the career development of young investigators pursuing research in the area of Endocrinology and is presented to the graduate student or postdoctoral fellow submitting the best abstract to the Experimental Biology meeting in the area of Endocrinology and Metabolism. Dr. Yosten previously received the Research Excellence Award in 2009 and the Mead Johnson Research Recognition Award in 2011 from the Society.
Timothy Doyle, Ph.D, post-doctoral fellow, (mentor Dr. Daniela Salvemini) was recently awarded a Future Leaders in Pain Research Grant from the American Pain Society for 2012. The grant "Sphingosine receptor 1 and morphine antinociceptive tolerance" was selected for one of three 18-month grant awards for $20,000.
Dr Daniela Salvemini was invited to give a lecture on "Novel therapeutic approaches based upon S1P targeting in pain" on September 26, 2011 in the Department of Physiology, Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria.
Drs. Bond and Griggs from the Center of World Health and Medicine (CWHM), who hold adjunct appointments in the Pharmacological and Physiological Sciences Department, have established a joint research agreement with the Institute of One World Health (iOWH) to develop new drugs to combat childhood diarrhea (http://www.slu.edu/x47844.xml).  iOWH awarded the CWHM $350,000 to synthesize and evaluate the pharmacology of drug candidates.
Thomas C. Westfall, the William Beaumont Professor and Chair, Department of Pharmacological and Physiological Science, was recently given the 2011 Distinguished Teacher Award in the category of Presentation Skills (PreClinical years) by Medical Students at Saint Louis University.
