Recommendations should be submitted via email to bioengreu@slu.edu or via fax to 314-977-8288 with the subject “Recommendation for (applicant’s name) 2011”. See additional information below and on the application form.

Personal statement

Your personal statement should clearly indicate why you’d like to participate in a summer research program in bioengineering, and how such an experience fits into your career goals. It should also include the faculty mentor(s) you’d be interested in working with during the program and if you have had any previous research experience. Please visit the 2009 projects  and 2010 projects pages for examples of previous projects.

If you are applying to be a peer mentor, you should include details about why you’d like to be a mentor, including what types of programming you’d like to organize for the summer. Also detail your previous research experience; a recommendation letter from your previous research advisor stating your ability to perform research and be a peer mentor is strongly recommended.

Letters of Recommendations

A form is available within the application form to give to your recommenders. Useful information for us includes (but is not limited to) the student's potential for a bioengineering career and reasons the student's grades might not accurately represent his or her ability. Comments on the student's personality and working style can also help match the student with an appropriate project and advisor. Please send your letter directly to Dr. David W. Barnett at bioengreu@slu.edu with the subject of the email “Recommendation for (student’s name) 2010.”
