Students may pursue a joint concentration
in environmental health and epidemiology. This option
combines the core curricula of each. The concentration
focuses on developing skills needed to collect, manage,
analyze, and interpret environmental and occupational
health data. Graduates will be prepared to carry out basic
epidemiologic activities in public health programs, industry,
consulting, and academic settings.
Epidemiology and environmental health are established
public health sciences. The broadly defined objective
of epidemiology is to advance understanding of the distribution
and determinants of health and disease in human populations.
Environmental and occupational health focuses on the health
consequences of environmental toxins, how they can be
identified, how their risk to human health can be determined
and communicated, and how this risk can be managed to
minimize its impact on human health. Combining these disciplines
provides the student with the tools necessary to evaluate
the impact of environmental toxins on the distribution
of disease in populations within the community and at
work
