Project WOW Frequently Asked Questions

What does the card reader do?
The card reader has two purposes. First, it counts the number of times people pass in front of it, therefore giving us an idea of how many people use the trail. Second, it allows people who are enrolled in a program swipe a membership card when they arrive and leave the trail so that we can report back to them their personal use of the walking trail. This also allows us to look at the frequency and length of time the trail is used in addition to what times of day are most popular.

What does the card reader look like?
The card reader is made up of a box mounted on a post on one side of the trail and a post with a reflector on the opposite side of the trail. The box serves as a protective casing for the equipment inside and has a small padlock on it that can only be opened by authorized personnel.

How is the card reader powered?
The card reader is powered using a marine deep cell battery that is charged using a solar charger. The reflector does not need to be charged.

Is the information collected from the card reader confidential?
Yes. There are no cameras associated with the card reader. Those who have a membership card will have a secret number associated with their card. Any personal information associated with the membership number will be kept in a protected and locked file. People with membership cards will have this explained to them in more detail. The infrared beam will only count people without membership cards; no personal information will be obtained.

Can only those with a membership card use the trail with a card reader?
No, access to the trail is not limited to people with a card. The trail is open for anyone to use. The card reader will help people track their physical activity.

What kind of maintenance is involved?
The card reader will be maintained by authorized personnel from Saint Louis University, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (Southeast district office) and possibly some coalition volunteers. You will be provided with contact information if you have any questions or concerns at any time.
