Individualized
faculty attention
At Saint
Louis University School of Public Health, faculty members take
an active role in the education and professional preparation of
the students. Most courses are taught by core faculty and
faculty members are regularly available to students both during
office hours and informal gatherings. Moreover, a number of
students each year are given the opportunity to work with
faculty members who are principal investigators of large
research projects, affording students even more exposure to
mentors and role models.
Each
master’s student is assigned an adviser to provide information
on and assistance with the student’s schedule and courses,
University and School policies and procedures, and career and
professional decisions. The adviser is a faculty member whose
area of expertise falls in the concentration or option the
student has selected. This assignment procedure is used by all
departments and programs in the School and is coordinated
through the Director of Student Services. Students typically
meet with their advisers at least once each semester. To
facilitate interaction, advisers are expected to maintain office
hours on an open-door or appointment basis.
“Dr. O’Neall has been my favorite professor here at SLU SPH
because she takes great pride in being available anytime,
anywhere, for anyone. Not only does Dr. O’Neall have an
open-door policy, but she has a very diverse background working
in Public Health and she brings so much knowledge and experience
to our school.” (Mandy Lemes, MPH ’06)
