Here's what people are saying about...

Hands-on research opportunities

Research productivity at the School of Public Health grows annually.  For 2005-6, SLU SPH held over $43 million in committed research funds. The high caliber of the work done by our faculty scholars is reflected in the national centers based at SLU SPH. These include centers focused on Obesity, Tobacco Control, Diabetes, Biosecurity, Environmental Health, Chronic Disease Prevention, Health Communication, and Public Health Workforce Development.  Many students at the School have the opportunity to share in the valuable work of these centers through research assistantships that also provide a stipend and tuition assistance.

“Sharing Discoveries, Improving Lives” has become the motto reflecting the relevancy of the School of Public Health research, teaching, and service. As a result of a strategic initiative process conducted in 2003-4, SLU SPH adopted Translation and Dissemination as the overarching framework ensuring that the research conducted by the School is taken through the process of application and change.

Partnerships are one of the ways that SLU SPH reaches out to gather and disseminate information directly related to a target audience.  For example, SLUCOR is a joint research program of the School of Public Health and the SLU School of Medicine focused on Outcomes Research. The Center for Diabetes Control is a joint endeavor of the SLU SPH and Washington University School of Medicine. We work closely with our community partners to see that everyone benefits from student involvement in care delivery, research, and service.  These partnerships provide students with further opportunities to work on research projects while completing their studies.

“Because I have had the opportunity to work at SLU while attending graduate school, I have been able to reap the benefits of both the coursework and the research within Public Health. This has allowed for a much richer understanding of my subject area and an appreciation for the vast talents here at the school.” (Leslie McIntosh, MPH ’07, PhD student)
