Saint Louis University

Occasionally, we offer what we call "institutes," which are multi-session and/or multi-day hands-on learning experiences, on topics of interest to a broad range of educators. Sessions are structured sequentially, and involve both structured learning time and unstructured work time, so that participants can learn from one another, not just from Center staff or facilitators. Examples of recently-developed institutes include the Online Teaching and Learning Institute and the Winter Institute.

Online Teaching & Learning Institute

The Online Teaching & Learning Institute (OTLI) is a four-day intensive experience for full-time SLU faculty who are preparing to teach online.  It is aimed at faculty with little to no experience in the online format.

OTLI features participant-driven workshops and conversations about creating collaborative learning environments online, online learning theory, and authentic and traditional assessment methods. Afternoons are dedicated to individual work time so participants can complete the week with a course plan well underway. The Institute gives participants many opportunities for individualized and group consultations with the Center's Instructional Developers (IDs), in addition to giving faculty across Saint Louis University a chance to learn how other professors and disciplines approach online teaching and learning.

NB: Each session of OTLI is capped at 12 participants to maintain the quality of individualized attention as well as a high level of participant interaction within the Institute. Registration priority is given to those full-time teaching faculty members who are planning to teach an online or blended course in the next two semesters and who have not already gone through the Institute. In each OTLI session, we aim to create a group of faculty who represent a cross-section of different departments, schools, and programs at Saint Louis University so as to foster an interdisciplinary cohort interested in exploring effective practices and pedagogy for teaching online.

The Reinert Center welcomes requests from academic units or departments to provide a customized version of OTLI.

Registrations is NOW OPEN for Summer 2015 OTLI beginning June 1 and continuing through June 4. Register Here.

Winter Institute

This annual event is a full-day series of workshops and presentations, typically held on the Thursday before spring classes begin. The Winter Institute has a different focus each year. Past Winter Institutes have focused on The Art and Science of Learning, Engaging All Learners in the 21st Century, Writing to Learn at a Jesuit Institution, and Teaching at a Jesuit Institution: Informing Our Practice.
