Writing to Learn

During the 2011-2012 academic year, the Paul C. Reinert, S.J. Center for Teaching Excellence will offer a series of programs focused on the place of writing in the teaching and learning process. We'll offer faculty and graduate students the opportunity to explore a broad range of topics, including: designing effective writing assignments, working with second-language writers, evaluating written work, and more.

Saint Louis University's increasingly diverse student body offers many new opportunities to learn from students with a variety of cultural experiences and educational backgrounds. However, this diversity can also sometimes present challenges, particularly when multilingual students are asked to produce written work in English. In order to facilitate better understanding of the challenges multilingual students face, and to enhance instructors' ability to work effectively with multilingual writers, the Reinert Center for Teaching Excellence is pleased to welcome Dr. Anthony Silva, Professor of English and Director of the ESL Graduate Program and the ESL Writing Program at Purdue University.

In his keynote address, "Working with Second Language Writers," Dr. Silva will address the common challenges and rewards of working with multilingual students, helping faculty and graduate instructors to better understand the patterns they might see and offer suggestions for how they can work more effectively with these students. After the keynote, he will facilitate an interactive workshop, where attendees will have an opportunity to apply what they've learned by looking at sample student writing and by considering how these lessons might inform their own teaching.

Dr. Silva co-founded the Journal of Second Language Writing (which he also co-edited until 2007) and co-hosts the international Symposium on Second Language Writing. He has published widely on multilingual writing, co-editing four books on the subject and co-authoring A Synthesis of Research on Second Language Writing (Routledge, 2008). He also has written for numerous journals, including TESOL Quarterly, College Composition and Communication, Modern Language Journal, Written Communication, and Composition Studies.

Dr. Silva's visit is the kick-off event for the CTE's year-long Writing to Learn series, which will feature workshops and conversations on a variety of topics related to student writing. The event is open to all SLU faculty and graduate students.
