Internship Opportunities & Procedures
An internship is treated like a 3-credit course, requiring a minimum of 50 hours per each credit, or 10 hours per week. All internships will be designed in close consultation with the department's internship advisor and participating organizations or institutions. The internship plan should be discussed and approved at least five months prior to the internship's start date.
Under University policy and pursuant to federal regulations, any student engaged in an internship for SLU credit must be signed up for the relevant SLU course number by the internship start date. No student may conduct an internship during one timespan while taking the corresponding course credits during another timespan (e.g. a summer internship with associated course credits taken during the fall), except when a student is continuing internship work to clear a grade of Incomplete from a previous semester's internship course.
Internship Examples & Sites
American Studies majors have taken on an impressive variety of projects...
Rob Wilson and Sara Jatcko worked in the Missouri Historical Society's collections, conducting research on artifacts for use in upcoming exhibitions.
Katie Schluge interned with a team at the Circuit Court Records project downtown, conserving and cataloguing a national treasure of documents from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
A group of students working with instructor Theresa Harvey undertook a service project in Old North St. Louis, working with an innovative bicycle repair and arts program for kids in the neighborhood.
