Research

Dr. Serfis teaches general, physical, and analytical chemistry courses, and has particular interest in thermodynamics air air-water interfaces.  Her research focuses on the construction of model membranes using Langmuir monolayer techniques.  Studies of their interactions with proteins secreted from viral pathogens is a current interest.

Dr. Serfis is the Undergraduate Program Director and Associate Chair of the department.  She has been involved in developing the integrated advising and mentoring program in the College of Arts and Sciences, and has developed mentoring activities for students in the Chemistry department.  She is active in the American Chemical Society and serves on a national committee.  As a member of the Committee on Local Section Activities, she interacts with chemists from around the nation to assist them in promoting chemistry in their communities.  Also a yoga enthusiast, Dr. Serfis has combined her interests in yoga and teaching; she developed a Health and Wellness course for freshmen to provide them with tools to manage stress.  She also offers a weekly stress-busters yoga fusion class for graduate students in the department.
