The translational diffusion constants for nonpolar solutes in nonpolar solvents (n-alkanes and cycloalkanes) are being measured using microcapillaries and the Taylor dispersion method. The results are being compared with the predictions of the Stokes-Einstein equation and are being interpreted using the results of molecular dynamics simulations and rough-hard-sphere theories. Free volume approaches are also being considered.
The determination of rotational diffusion constants of paramagnetic solutes using electron spin resonance also remains of interest as does the interpretation of the diffusion constants in terms of properties of the solute and solvent. When possible, the results of translational and rotational studies for a given solute-solvent system are compared.
