Highlights of SLU's Chemistry Degree Programs

The Department's Bachelor of Science Degree has received continuous certification by the American Chemical Society since 1946.

The Department places great emphasis on participation in undergraduate research, and both B.S. and B.A. chemistry majors have ample opportunities to involve themselves in research projects under the close mentorship of a full-time faculty member. Students will have the opportunity to use a variety of specialized equipment and computers in their instructional and research laboratories.

Selected undergraduate students may have opportunities to work with faculty members as Laboratory Assistants in undergraduate laboratories. The undergraduate lab assistant receives a stipend for this activity.

The typical size of classes: A separate section of General Chemistry is offered for freshmen majoring in Chemistry or Biochemistry only. This course enrolls around 40-50 students. 8-14 students is average for upper-level courses for students in the B.S. program.

A special organic chemistry course is offered which is limited to only B.S. or B.A. Chemistry majors. Typical enrollment in this class is < 35 students.

The Department hosts several social events each year and sponsors a Chemistry Club for interested students.
