Research Centers and Programs in EAS

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences has a tradition of combining strong classroom and field-based instruction with internationally-recognized research across a broad spectrum of the physical sciences, including seismology and solid earth geophysics, tectonics, synoptic meteorology, environmental systems, and the study of modern and ancient climate change. Although growing, we are small enough to provide a warm, collegial atmosphere that promotes extensive interaction between students and faculty. The department frequently hosts visiting scientists from around the globe, and sponsors technical and general seminars where students can interact with specialists from a wide variety of career options. Our students also have the opportunity to work directly with faculty on their research and pursue internships through our growing network of contacts in the public and private sector.

The current department is the result of a rich heritage that includes the first geophysics department in the western hemisphere, and as such, we offer a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, from more traditional disciplines within the earth and atmospheric sciences to innovative new undergraduate programs that provide unique, campus-wide learning experiences focused on understanding the interconnection between natural systems and human society. The department is also a founding partner in the new SLU Center for Environmental Sciences, which is chartered to bring together research units from across the university to examine the interaction between humans and the environment. This fusion of traditional and new degree programs with world-class research provides our students with an unparalleled opportunity to explore their interests and prepare for a wide variety of careers after graduation.

Higher purpose. Greater good.
