Studio Art

The Studio Art Program offers scholarships to students demonstrating exceptional skill in art. Awarded on a competitive basis, interested students must declare their intention to major in Studio Art and present a portfolio of their work to become eligible. Scholarship awards apply toward tuition costs and general fees (not course fees) of the student.

Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis, so students must reapply each year. Students must also maintain several requirements to keep their scholarship:

  • Major in Studio Art
  • Achieve a grade of "B" in all Studio Art coursework

As of Fall 2012, students submit a portfolio to become a studio art major. Scholarship submission has therefore changed to reflect this requirement.

Portfolio Submission is at least twelve pieces and no more than fifteen. Include examples of observation-based drawings (not copied from photographs), and works in other media that represent your range of interests and skills in art.

The Studio Art portfolio review process uses SlideRoom, an online review system. Applicants register and submit their portfolio on the SlideRoom website using SLU's portal: SlideRoom is web-based, so all applicants need is an Internet connection and a modern web browser - and applicants with prepared digital files can quickly upload their portfolio within minutes. For more information, please visit the SlideRoom help desk frequently asked questions.

SlideRoom charges applicants a $10 transaction fee to submit a portfolio. For questions or concerns regarding the portfolio submission process, the SlideRoom fee, or to request a fee waiver, please contact Rick Dunn at

Please be sure to include the title, media, size, and date of each of the images you are submitting when requested in SlideRoom.

In addition to their portfolio, students should submit the following
Submission form-New Students(pdf)   Submission Form-Returning Students(pdf)
• a letter of recommendation from a current or previous art instructor (new students only)
• a listing of studio art coursework completed or currently taking
• a personal statement describing your studio art goals at SLU (limit to one page)
• a resume of any studio art exhibits and/or related work experience

If you have already submitted your portfolio earlier in order to become a studio art major, then send the additional materials to the address below to complete your application for the scholarship.
