Saint Louis University

The Theatre Program within the Department of Fine and
Performing Arts creates an education experience based
on the combination of theoretical classroom explorations
and practical production of plays. Our program specializes
in all aspects of a production, from set design and lighting,
to costume design, to the acting itself.

A Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from SLU prepares students
to enter M.F.A. programs in theatre and M.A. programs in
drama. It develops the essential skills to enter the job
market as actors and technicians for theatrical productions.
And it nurtures creativity as students effectively market the
variety of skills they acquire as theatre majors in outside

A Collaborative Company
Each semester the Theatre Program
produces a season of plays, challenging
students to consider diverse values, viewpoints
and expressions of the creative imagination. Learning
in this way requires collaboration. To fuel this,
students form a company of actors, designers
and technicians responsible for all aspects of
the production.

Through mentoring and advising from faculty,
students work together, pushing each other to new levels
of learning. They learn to clearly and appropriately
present their imaginative ideas to others, exploring
their creativity. Most importantly, students develop
a collective responsibility and commitment to their work.

But our collaborative efforts don't end in the classroom.
Through faculty connections, many students find
auditions among the 30 professional theatres around
St. Louis. By branching into these communities,
students enhance their education by encountering
new perspectives and new roles.

Excel in Any Career
Our program and core curriculum provides students with the educational foundation for success in careers inside and outside of theatre.

In keeping with the liberal arts focus of Saint Louis University and a long tradition of undergraduate theatre education, students develop a basic level of proficiency and practical knowledge of all aspects of theatre. Through internships and working with professional companies, students develop valuable experience to enhance their resumes.

Our students have excelled in a variety of careers. Recent alumni have gone on to work in theatre in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. Others have attended top graduate programs, including California Institute of the Arts, UCLA and Brown University. Others have taken the fine training from our program into professional careers as film studio executives, producers, lawyers, marketers and educators.
