Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. It seeks to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by members in a variety of ways.

Undergraduate History Conference:

In keeping with above-mentioned goals, the Alpha Mu chapter of Phi Alpha Theta sponsors an annual conference to promote scholarship and intellectual exchange among SLU's historians. The competition is open to any undergraduate history major or minor and is held during the spring semester. Each student competes for prize money and for the honor of having his/her name inscribed on the Heithaus trophy, which is named for Fr. Claude H. Heithaus, S.J..  Fr. Heithaus, a faculty member at SLU, was a pioneer in the struggle for racial justice at Saint Louis University and advocated desegregating the university in the 1940s.

Membership:

In order to be considered for membership, undergraduate students must have completed at least 12 semester hours in History (4 courses) with a GPA of at least 3.1 in History. They must also have a GPA of 3.0 or better overall.  Graduate students must have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours towards their Master's Degree in History and have a GPA above 3.5.
