Saint Louis University

The Political Science department encourages majors to take political internships as part of their degree programs. These provide excellent practical experience that potential employers appreciate. Internships often help majors select a future career. Students select internships in consultation with their mentors.

The department offers eleven different internships, which may satisfy up to 6 credit hours of electives: Campaign Practicum, State Legislative Internship, Washington Internship, Overseas Internship, Foreign Service Internship, Women Leaders Internship, Administrative Internship, Federal Government Internship, Political Science Internship, Research Internship.

For a 3-credit internship, students need to:

  • work 10 to 12 hours a week throughout the semester,
  • write a daily journal on their experience,
  • write a 20-page essay after the internship is completed, in consultation with the faculty member directing the internship.

A 6-credit internship will require twice as many hours and typically two 20-page essays.
