|Dr. Joel Jennings is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Saint Louis University. He is interested in Latino/a immigration, new destinations, citizenship and geographic scale. His research explores the geographies of the emergent Latino population in St. Louis, Missouri. He is currently involved in an on-going multi-phase investigation into attitudes towards immigrants in Missouri. Joel is a former Board Chair/CEO and current Board member for Interfaith Legal Services for Immigrants (ILSI) a non-profit organization that provides legal services to low income immigrants and refugees in the St. Louis region. He is a co-founder and coordinator for the St. Louis Consortium for Latino Research (STLCLR) which brings researchers from SLU, Washington University and the University of Missouri, St. Louis together with Latino-serving organizations and individual community members. Joel previously served in various capacities for Congressman Russ Carnahan (D-MO3), including handling immigration casework, and as a campaign staffer during the 2004 and 2006 elections. At Saint Louis University, his courses include; Soc 118: Geography of World Regions; Soc 218: Cities and Space: Urban Geography; Soc 318: Immigration and Soc 418: Citizenship (a challenge seminar designed for graduate school-bound juniors and seniors). In 2010, Joel received the Robert A. Johnston, S.J. Award for Teaching Excellence by the College of Arts and Letters at Saint Louis University. Joel earned his doctoral degree from the Department of Geography at Cambridge University, England. His studies there were supported by a Gates Cambridge Trust Fellowship and an Overseas Research Scholarship (British government).|
