Application and Prerequisites
The Department typically admits four doctoral students per year. We welcome
all qualified applicants and offer competitive funding to each of our admitted
students for four years.
Students seeking admission to the Ph.D. program will have earned a Master's
degree in theology, religious studies, classics, ancient history, or some other
closely-related field. Interested students will also have gained proficiency in one
or more research languages and have completed significant course work in
subjects related to their proposed area of concentration.
Application requirements include: transcript(s), three letters of
recommendation, GRE scores, resume, professional goal statement, and three
Personal Potential Index evaluations (recommended).
Interested students should apply at http://www.slu.edu/graduate-admission-
home by January 1.
For more information on prerequisites for admission and the application
process, please see the PhD Student Handbook here.
The Department also participates in the Joint Ph.D. in Theology and Health Care
Ethics. Students interested in the joint degree program should contact the
Center for Health Care Ethics. The Admissions Committee strongly encourages qualified
applications and favors those who already have a master's degree in theology or a relevant
field. Requirements for admission can be found at:
