All doctoral students are admitted on four-year assistantships, with 54 credit
hours of tuition remission, health insurance benefits, and an $18,000 stipend
per nine-month contract on the following terms:

In the first and second years of study, students provide 20 hours of work per
week as Research Assistants to the faculty to whom they are assigned. In the
third year of study, students usually serve as Teaching Assistants for large-
lecture courses in which they lead small group discussions. In the fourth year of
study, students teach four introductory undergraduate courses in the
department. In the fifth year of study, students may have the opportunity to
teach up to four 2000-level courses in the department as adjuncts, provided
that they have received strong teaching evaluations in the preceding year.
