Summary:
The administration of cidofovir or analogs of cidofovir together with a smallpox vaccine, for example the Dryvax® vaccine produced by Wyeth, has been shown to cause a decrease in the side effects of vaccination without affecting the efficacy of the vaccination. The antiviral agent and the vaccine may be administered either as an admixture in a single vaccine composition or as separate compositions that are administered substantially concurrently in any order at appropriate dosage levels. It is envisioned that the co-administration of any antiviral agent with any live vaccine will decrease the side effects of the vaccination while maintaining or improving the efficacy of the vaccine.

Applications include vaccination against various types of viral diseases including but not limited to Smallpox virus, variola, Influenza, Mumps, Rabies, Polio, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, HIV, and others.
