A new partnership between the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Food Innovation and Entrepreneurship program will offer North St Louis high school students the chance to learn about entrepreneurship and revitalizing their neighborhoods.

The Sweet Potato Project uses abandoned lots as gardens for the students to grow sweet potatoes during the summer. While not working in the gardens, the students are taught basic business and life skills designed to empower the students. After the sweet potatoes are harvested, the students will process the sweet potatoes, make cookies, and sell them through sales presentations at local churches and other organizations. The students learn that they have the power to change their lives and their community through urban farming and distributing food back into the food deserts of St Louis.
