Evelyn Ford Crayton, a graduate of the SLU Nutrition and Dietetics Department, will retire effective January 2014

Evelyn Ford Crayton, Ph.D., R.D., L.D., a 1969 dietetic internship and 1972 Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics graduate, has announced her retirement as of January 1 this year. Dr. Crayton is a registered dietitian and professor of nutrition, dietetics and hospitality management at Auburn University. She also has served the Alabama Cooperative Extension System for more than 36 years as an extension specialist in food and nutrition, led the early Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program and provided leadership to the Family and Consumer Science Program. Her area of specialty is nutrition education addressing public and community nutrition challenges.

Over her 36 year career, Dr. Crayton has made numerous contributions to ACES, Auburn University, the state of Alabama, nationally and internationally. She was the first African American female to achieve the rank of Professor in Nutrition, Dietetics and Hospitality Management at Auburn and was named one of the 100 Most Influential Blacks in Alabama by Congresswoman Terry Sewell. She also has an extensive history of grantsmanship, generating more than $20 million in grants since 2003. At the time of her retirement, she is being honored with the distinction of emeritus status.

Dr. Crayton has served several positions with the American Dietetic Association, the United States Food and Drug Administration's Food Advisory Committee, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, the American Diabetes Association, the Journal of Ethnicity and Disease, the Alabama Food Exposition and the Alabama Dietetic Association. She was also recently elected to serve as President-Elect of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association) for 2014-2015 and will assume the Presidency in 2015-2016.
