The role of muscle imbalance in injury and rehabilitation; Dysfunctional breathing; Vocal Cord Dysfunction
Current Research Project # 1
Title: Point-of-care diagnostic testing for individuals with exercise induced dyspnea or dysfunctional breathing.
Study Design: Cross-over design
Objective: To explore the efficacy of point-of-care diagnostic testing for accurate diagnoses for people with exercise induced dyspnea.
Background: Individuals who complain of difficulty breathing during exercise (exercise induced dyspnea) are often diagnosed with exercise induced bronchospasm and treated with asthma medications without sufficient objective testing to identify the source of their problems. Quite frequently, these individuals have medical conditions, other than asthma, that need specific treatment and a lack of appropriate point-of-care diagnostic testing delays appropriate treatments.
Outcomes: A battery of point-of-care diagnostic tests that provide the clinician with objective data from which to make an accurate diagnosis.

Current Research Project # 2
Title: Acute Kidney Failure after Anaerobic Exercise Without Rhabdomyolysis
Study Design: Systematic Review
Objective: To present a systematic review of case presentations of acute renal failure after exercise that is not associated with rhabdomyolysis
Background: Acute renal failure after anaerobic exercise (ALPE) has been reported. This condition is characterized by severe loin pain, patchy vasoconstriction of the renal vessels, and normal serum creatinine concentration. Some patients have been treated with dialysis, while others have been treated more conservatively. The condition is known to reoccur, but is believed to be reversible.
Outcomes: A presentation of ALPE to assist athletic health care providers with recognition and treatment options for patients reporting signs and symptoms of ALPE.
