Sarah WalshSarah Walsh, MOT, Instructor and Academic Fieldwork Coordinator for the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy was selected as president of the Gateway Occupational Therapy Education Council for a two- year term. The council is comprised of Program Directors and Academic Fieldwork Coordinators from the occupational therapy educational programs in the St. Louis area. The council is committed to promoting collaborative relationships, facilitate opportunities for professional growth, and serve as a resource to the occupational therapy community.

The president of GOTEC is elected every two years by members of the organization. The president's main role is to serve as the contact person for GOTEC, to facilitate meetings and oversee the development of goals for future action, and to oversee the work of the many committees that have been established to ensure that we are making progress toward our goal of bridging the gap between the academic programs and the didactic coursework and fieldwork education.

In Walsh's words, "Fieldwork education is a vital part of occupational therapy programs: it facilitates the movement from explicit knowledge to tacit knowledge. Our hope is to provide practicing occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants with resources to increase interest and participation in serving the profession in the important role of fieldwork educator".

To achieve this, the Gateway Occupational Therapy Education Council acts as a resource for fieldwork educators and provides continuing education workshops two times per year specifically targeted toward fieldwork educators, in hopes of enhancing their knowledge, skill, and confidence related to acting as a fieldwork educator.

The Gateway Occupational Therapy Education Council hopes to reach a much larger audience over the next year. For more information on the Gateway Occupational Therapy Education Council visit their Facebook page or follow them on Twitter.
