After a national search, Donald Jacobs, M.D., a long-time faculty member, has been appointed chair of the department of surgery.

Jacobs, who is professor in the division of vascular surgery and director of the vascular surgery residency program, has been a member of the SLU family since 1994 and served as interim department chair for the past year.

Jacobs is a leader in patient care, scholarship and research. Since 2005, he has been selected annually to be among the Best Doctors - St. Louis.

His research interests are in the areas of endovascular treatment of atherosclerosis and aneurysms. Jacobs is the author of numerous articles, book chapters and one book. He serves as a reviewer for publications that include the Journal of Vascular Surgery and the Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Therapy.

Jacobs is president-elect of the Midwest Vascular Surgery Society and has served as president of the St. Louis Surgical Society, St. Louis Vascular Society and Missouri Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.

He received his bachelor's, master's and medical degrees from the University of Nebraska, where he also completed a general surgery residency, including a research year. He completed his vascular surgery residency and fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

The appointment became effective June 1.
