Overview: Students who pursue a degree in Earth and atmospheric sciences are interested in science, nature and the outdoors, and environmental and social issues. Students are typically interested in the following questions: Why are there mountains, earthquakes, and volcanoes? What causes thunderstorms, tornadoes, hail, and heavy rain? What is global warming and what can be done to stop it? What is El Niño? Why did dinosaurs become extinct? Where does water come from and how do we know it is safe for us to drink?
Careers in the Field: Graduates, both from meteorology and geoscience, often enroll in graduate programs, pursue careers at government research establishments, or enter the private sector at corporations or environmental firms that have business concerns with the Earth and its environment. Graduates also have the academic requirements to enroll in medical school, law school, or other graduate and professional programs.
Scholarships These scholarships are awarded to outstanding undergraduates to help them continue their studies in the geosciences. Awardees must declare a major in the geosciences by October 1 of their sophomore or junior year. They must have an excellent academic record and must submit a two-page essay describing why they are interested in the geosciences. Up to three $1,500 awards are given annually. Students should apply by October 1 of their sophomore or junior year.
Summer Field Scholarships Summer Field Scholarships of $750 are awarded to up to three students, normally juniors, with good academic records who are accepted into a Summer Geologic Field Camp.
