Saint Louis University Elementary Education Degree OverviewSaint Louis University's undergraduate degree in elementary education prepares you to help young people expand their minds. If you choose to major in elementary education at Saint Louis University, you will learn communication skills and special techniques specific to learners in grades one through six.
As elementary education professionals are expected to have knowledge about all subjects, you will take courses in children's literature and media, creative arts and movement, and elementary methods of teaching mathematics, science and social studies, among other areas.
Practicum experiences are required throughout the program, which culminates in a semester of courses dedicated to professional development and student teaching. You'll spend the greatest amount of time teaching in a private or public school setting during this semester.
What You'll Learn in SLU's Elementary Education Program
Students majoring in elementary education at SLU take courses in a specific sequence. The first block addresses issues related to classroom observation. You'll also study learning theory and examine schools as a social system, as well as learn about human growth and development.
The second block examines diversity in the classroom, learning styles, exceptionality and different styles of teaching. The remaining blocks are dedicated to methods of teaching subject matter areas and levels, diagnosing learning problems and developing learning activities. The program cumulates with a block dedicated to teaching in professional environments.
