English as a Second Language (ESL)

The English as a Second Language program (ESL) prepares international students for undergraduate and graduate study, the TOEFL exam and U.S. culture.

SLU's ESL program offers an Intensive English Program, university-credit courses and academic language support to undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Interactive classes to help you develop academic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills
  • Opportunities to join conversation groups with American students and audit University classes to improve your English skills
  • Intermediate to advanced instruction

The paper-based institutional TOEFL is given at the end of each semester; the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) is available on campus by appointment.

Students may enroll in the ESL program until they achieve the language proficiency to meet their needs before enrolling in a degree program. Admitted students may begin enrollment in any session.
