English Language Center (ELC)
The English Language Center provides specialized writing support for all Saint Louis University students whose native language is not English.
In one-on-one consultations and in group workshops, ELC writing consultants provide feedback and offer strategies to improve your writing at every stage, from brainstorming for ideas, to organizing a draft, to polishing the final document. We also offer assistance in other language-related areas, including TOEFL and SLUWE test-taking strategies, multi-media projects, grammatical accuracy, research skills, and conversation practice.
You may make an appointment with the ELC at any point in your writing process, but you will find our help most effective if you schedule your appointment with sufficient time to revise your work before the assignment is due.
To schedule a consultation, use SLU Appointments (instructions below).
ELC Location, Hours & Availability
The ELC is part of the Center for Global Citizenship, and is located in Des Peres Hall 108.
The ELC opens on the second week of class each semester and remains open through the last day of final exams. We close on official university holidays and on days when classes are not in session (Fall and Spring Break, for example). Please check our scheduler for specific appointment availability.
Making an Appointment
The ELC uses SLU Appointments to schedule writing consultations. There is a limit to one appointment per day. We recommend no more than 2 appointments per week to make sure other students have access to our services and that you use additional academic resources (like faculty office hours, study groups, etc.). Excessive appointments will be canceled by the ELC staff.
To use SLU Appointments:
1. Visit http://myslu.slu.edu and enter your SLU ID and password.
2. Click the "Tools" tab.
3. Click on the SLU Appointment icon.
4. Select ELC and "make an appointment."
5. Select your preferred days and times, then click search.
6. Select the desired appointment.
7. Please take note of your appointment date, time, and consultant.
8. You will receive a confirmation via SLU email.
If you have difficulties making an appointment, you may also schedule your appointments in person at the ELC. Come by DPH 108 and ask a consultant for help.
Need to cancel an appointment?
Should you need to cancel your appointment, go back to SLU Appointments and click "cancel appointment." You are expected to cancel any appointments that you will not be able to attend. Failure to cancel before the scheduled meeting time will result in a "no-show." After 3 no-shows, you will be blocked from making appointments for the remainder of the semester.
Services for Writers
International Student Study Night
The ELC sponsors International Student Study Night, every Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Des Peres Hall 111. ELC consultants will be available to answer questions about common assignments, general writing skills, and test-taking strategies. No appointments necessary. (International Student Study Night is not offered in the summer semester.)
In groups, students can request workshops to work on writing skills with an ELC consultant. Workshops are a great option when the ELC is in highest demand. You can choose from the following workshops, or request a custom workshop:
- MLA style
- APA style
- Researching techniques
- SLUWE strategies
- Thesis statements and organization
- Presenting with PowerPoint
- Taking essay exams
To schedule a workshop, email firstname.lastname@example.org. Please include the names of all students interested in attending the workshop.
In a one-on-one consultation with an ELC consultant, you will develop strategies to become a more capable and proficient writer. We also can help you prioritize your writing needs and assess your individual strengths and weaknesses as a writer.
ELC consultants will work with you to improve your grammatical accuracy, but will not edit your papers. Consultants will help you identify error patterns in your writing and develop strategies to correct these errors, but we will never “fix” a paper in ways that raise it to a level of proficiency and fluency beyond what you can achieve without our assistance.
The ELC accepts walk-ins when consultants are available, but appointments are strongly encouraged. Consultations begin on the hour and last for 45 minutes. Students may make a maximum of one appointment per day and three appointments per week. To make an appointment, use our scheduler.
Our ELC consultants are SLU faculty members, graduate students, and undergraduate students who have been trained to assist students whose native language is not English and to foster each writer’s sense of control over the writing process. We take pride in our roles as interpreters and ambassadors of academic and American culture, and we are dedicated to helping SLU’s international students become more proficient writers.
For additional questions, contact the ELC Coordinator at email@example.com.
