English Proficiency Requirements

The minimum requirement to get into ESL is 480 on the PBT, 55 on the iBT, or 5.5 on the IELTS. These scores must be submitted to the Office of Admissions when applying.
If you have been admitted to SLU conditionally, you are required to take ESL classes. A Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT) and SLU Writing Exam (SLUWE) are administered at the beginning of the semester in order to determine which level of ESL you will be in. There are 3 levels: ESL 90, EAP 100, and EAP 110. "EAP" stands for English for Academic Purposes.
In order to be released from ESL/EAP, you need a 550 on the PBT, a 4 on the SLUWE, and passing grades in your ESL classes. There is one additional semester, EAP 120, for those who have a PBT of 525-549 and a 4- on the SLUWE. In the EAP 120 level, you can take three undergraduate classes.
Any student admitted conditionally as an undergraduate has a maximum of 18 consecutive months to pass the language requirement. Summer classes may be required.
If you have been admitted to take ESL classes and you are not interested in being an undergraduate or graduate, these restrictions do not apply for exit from the program.
